What is Valorant?

The first step to learning all about Valorant is to understand what it is: basically, it’s a first-person shooter (FPS) where you have to take on the role of agents with unique abilities and compete in matches that involve planting or defusing bombs.

How Valorant works

Now that you know what it is, let’s clarify how Valorant works: before the start of the match, players are placed in the lobby, where they can choose their agents, taking into account their skills and the role they want to play in the team.

After selecting agents, players have the opportunity to buy weapons and skills with the money earned in previous rounds. We’ll explain this part of Valorant’s economics later.

A game of Valorant is made up of several rounds, usually divided into halves (attack and defense). Each round has a limited time in which the players must complete the objectives or eliminate the opposing team.

All about Valorant: attack

The attacking team needs to plant the bomb in one of the designated locations on the map, while the defending team tries to prevent it. When the player from the attacking team is inside the designated planting area, they can interact with the planting marker by pressing the standard interaction key (usually the “F” key on the keyboard).

All about Valorant: defense

Meanwhile, the defending team needs to disarm the Spike when it is planted. First, you need to locate where the Spike has been planted. To disarm it, you have to stand inside the disarming area and press the “F” key on your keyboard.

All about Valorant: economy

Valorant has a “Credits” economy. At the end of each round, you can earn or lose credits based on your performance. This money can be used to buy weapons, skills and utilities in subsequent rounds.

When does a Valorant match end?

A Valorant match is usually played over 25 rounds, with 12 rounds in each half (offense/defense) and an additional round in the event of a draw. The dynamic is quite simple: the match ends when the first team has completed 13 victories.

What are the Valorant maps?

There are ten maps in Valorant, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the fact that not all of them are always available in the ranked and casual queues. This is due to the map rotation that Riot Games implements, removing some temporarily. See the full list:

  • Sunset
  • Lotus
  • Pearl
  • Fracture
  • Breeze
  • Icebox
  • Bind
  • Haven
  • Split
  • Ascent

What is Valorant’s goal?

So Valorant’s objective is to win 13 rounds before the other team. If the attackers manage to successfully protect the Spike until it detonates, they earn a point. On the other hand, if the defenders manage to disarm the Spike or if the round runs out of time, which is 100 seconds, they win a point.

What type of game is Valorant?

Valorant is a first-person shooter (FPS, First-Person Shooter) because you can see events through the eyes of the character you are controlling. The view is focused on the weapon you’re holding and the environment around you.

What are Valorant’s functions?

There are four Functions of Valorant, which help categorize agents: Controller, Duelist, Initiator and Sentry. Check out what each one means:

Controllers

Controllers use their skills to block lines of sight and control critical spaces, creating tactical advantages.

Duelists

Meanwhile, the duelists are specialists in direct combat and lead the attacks, eliminating enemies with their offensive skills.

Initiators

Initiators prepare the ground for the team, revealing the enemies’ position and initiating confrontations.

Sentries

Finally, the sentinels defend areas of the map, fortify positions and provide information on enemy movements.
