Kitesurfing is a very popular water sport all over the world, especially in windy regions. The sport combines elements of surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing and paragliding, providing a unique and exciting experience for those who practice it or enthusiasts;

The practitioner of the sport is called a kitesurfer and has to use a board with a kite to perform radical maneuvers, jumps and stunts. This kite is controlled using lines and a control bar.

Sport is very detailed, so athletes need to be aware of the main terms that cover it. With that in mind, we’ve come up with a list that will make it easier for you to understand. Check out the glossary of kitesurfing!

Kitesurfing Glossary: learn more about the terms

Anemometer

An anemometer is a device used to measure wind speed. In kitesurfing, it is crucial to know the wind speed in order to choose the right kite size and ensure safety during practice.

Harness

The harness, also known as a trapeze, is a belt used by the kitesurfer to connect to the kite via the chicken loop. It distributes the force of the kite throughout the body, relieving tension in the arms.

Control bar

The control bar is a fundamental part of kitesurfing. It is used to steer the kite, adjusting the direction and power of the wind. Through the bar, the kitesurfer can maneuver the kite with precision.

Kite pump

The kite pump is used to inflate the air chambers of the kite, and is an essential process to prepare the equipment for use, ensuring that the kite retains its shape and functionality.

Safety Cable

The safety cable is a line connected to the kite and the kitesurfer’s harness. In the event of an emergency, disconnecting the kite minimizes the risk of accidents.

Chicken Loop

The chicken loop is a loop located on the control bar that connects the kitesurfer to the harness. It allows a quick and secure connection and is essential for controlling the kite.

Depower

Depower is the ability to reduce the kite’s power by adjusting the control bar. This is done by pulling or releasing the bar, which allows the kitesurfer to regulate the force of the wind on the kite.

Downwind

Downwind is the direction in which the wind is blowing. Sailing downwind means going in the same direction as the wind.

Edge

Edge is the technique of tilting the board in the water to control direction and speed. Edging correctly helps you sail upwind and perform maneuvers.

Foil

The foil is a special type of board that has a submerged wing. This design allows the board to rise above the water, providing a feeling of flight and greater efficiency in light winds.

Freeride

Freeride is a style of kitesurfing focused on sailing freely, without performing complex maneuvers. It is the most common form of kitesurfing, ideal for leisure and beginners.

Freestyle

Freestyle is a style of kitesurfing that involves performing maneuvers and tricks in the air. It requires skill and practice and is popular with more experienced kitesurfers.

Yawing

Yaw is the rotation of the board along its vertical axis.

Hook

Hook is the hook on the harness to which the chicken loop is attached. It is a crucial point of connection between the kitesurfer and the kite, allowing the transfer of power.

Inflatable

Inflatable is the name given to kites that have air chambers that must be inflated before use. These kites are more rigid and easier to relaunch from the water.

Jibe

Jibe is a transition maneuver in which the kitesurfer changes the direction of the wind on the sail when changing board. It’s an advanced technique that requires practice and coordination.

Kite

Kite is the name of the kite used in kitesurfing. There are various types and sizes of kites, each suitable for different wind conditions and sailing styles.

Kiteloop

Kiteloop is a maneuver in which the kite makes a complete circle in the air. It’s an advanced trick that requires precise control of the kite.

Leash

Leash is the safety line that connects the kitesurfer to the kite or board, helping to prevent the equipment from being lost in the event of a fall.

Loop

Loop is a generic term for any circular movement of the kite.

Shackle

A shackle is a metal accessory used to connect kite lines to anchor points. It’s a small part, but crucial for the safety and functioning of the equipment.

Nose

Nose is the front end of the kitesurf board.

Offshore

Offshore is the name of the wind that blows from the sea towards the land. This type of wind can be dangerous for beginner kitesurfers, as it can carry the kitesurfer away from the coast.

Onshore

Onshore is the wind that blows from the land out to sea. It’s usually safer for beginners, as it pushes the kitesurfer back towards the shore.

Pop

Pop is the technique of generating momentum to jump out of the water. It is an essential movement for performing aerial maneuvers in freestyle.

Relaunch

Relaunch is the technique of launching the kite out of the water after a fall. It’s an important skill for maintaining navigation continuity without having to return to the beach.

Safety

Safety is the name given to the systems and practices used to minimize risks during kitesurfing. It includes the use of appropriate equipment, knowledge of weather conditions and autoresailing techniques.

Sidereal

Sidereal is the wind that blows parallel to the coast. It is ideal for kitesurfing as it allows you to sail along the beach with greater control.

Sidereal Tide

Sidereal tides are winds that blow obliquely to the coast. This type of wind can provide good sailing conditions depending on its direction and intensity.

Trim

Trim is the name given to the adjustment of the kite’s lines to change its shape and performance. Trimming correctly can improve the kite’s efficiency and control in different wind conditions.
