All about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: what it is
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is part of a reimagining of the 1997 PlayStation classic by its original creators, which is being told over the course of three independent games. It is the most recent episode of the project, and comes after Final Fantasy VII Remake.
All about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: how it works
According to PlayStation itself, precisely because it’s a sequel, the recommendation is that players have played Final Fantasy VII Remake. However, the official announcement reads as follows:
“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been developed as a standalone experience and can be enjoyed as a gateway into the classic series of Final Fantasy VII.”
As an action RPG, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth allows the player to take the character on a journey.
All about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: what’s the story?
Final Fantasy VII Remake covered the “Midgar” part of Final Fantasy VII from 1997, with protagonist Cloud Strife joining the underground resistance group AVALANCHE and planning to challenge the Shinra Electric Power Company, which collects and processes the planet’s energy in gigantic Mako reactors.
With this, the story of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth follows the group, who leave the city of Midgar after a cataclysmic event and explore the planet in search of Sephiroth, one of the game’s major antagonists.
All about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: what’s the point?
The objective of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is to thwart the evil plans of Sephiroth, who seeks to destroy the planet using the legendary ability to summon Meteor.
During the journey, the characters explore new areas of the world outside Midgar (where most of the first remake takes place) and as well as fighting the threat of Sephiroth, also deal with the consequences of the actions of the Shinra megacorporation.
What’s the difference between Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Final Fantasy VII?
Contrary to what many players imagined (or perhaps even expected), the story of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is not a recreation of Final Fantasy VII. In other words: the narrative does not directly mirror the story of the original game.
“Final Fantasy VII Remake remained largely faithful to the events of the original game, but departed from the established canon at key points. These changes have also been recognized in the narrative with the introduction of the Whisperers, mysterious arbiters of fate who appear when the course of destiny is altered,” says PlayStation in the game’s synopsis.
This means that the events of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are unknown even to the biggest fans of the original. “Although there have been indications that important moments will be revisited, their outcome is a mystery, once again leveling the experience for newcomers and aficionados alike.”
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth characters
The characters in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth include the classics, but also new faces. Here are the details on each of them:
Cloud
Cloud is simply the protagonist of Final Fantasy VII, a former soldier of the elite military SOLDIER of the mega-corporation Shinra. After leaving the organization, he becomes a mercenary and eventually joins the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE. In the game, he is still trying to better understand his past.
Tifa
Tifa is Cloud’s childhood friend and one of the main members of AVALANCHE. She is a skilled fighter, specializing in martial arts, and has a strong sense of justice. Tifa is also the owner of the Seventh Heaven bar, which serves as a base for the group. Her determination and compassion make her a central character in the plot.
Aerith
Aerith has a deep connection with nature and the spiritual forces of the planet. She is the last of the Cetra, an ancient race with the ability to communicate with the planet. She joins Cloud’s group and becomes an essential figure in the fight against Shinra and Sephiroth.
Barret
Barret is the charismatic and impulsive leader of AVALANCHE, motivated by the desire to save the planet from Shinra’s abuses. He has a mechanical arm that can be equipped with various weapons.
Red XIII
Red XIII, whose real name is Nanaki, is a lion-like being with high intelligence and speaking abilities. He is one of the last of his kind and has a deep respect for his heritage and the duties of his clan. Red XIII joins Cloud’s group to fight Shinra and protect the planet.
Yuffie Kisaragi

Sephiroth
Sephiroth is the main antagonist of Final Fantasy VII, a former first-class SOLDIER who becomes a threat to the world. Originally considered a hero, he goes mad after discovering the truth about his origins and Shinra’s genetic experiments. Sephiroth seeks to destroy the world to become a god and is known for his sword, the Masamune, and his iconic musical theme.
