NBB rules: objective of the game
According to the NBB rules, the aim of a game in the competition is to determine a team’s victory based on the sum of points scored during the four periods of play.
Each basket made during the game is worth a different score, depending on the player’s position.
A game of basketball is marked by a lot of strategy, player skill, physical conditioning and, of course, the best possible teamwork.
So, in addition to winning, an NBB basketball match should be very attractive to those watching, showing that the sport can be very entertaining and exciting.
NBB rules: match duration
NBB rules state that a basketball match must last four periods, each with 10 minutes of playing time. So, in theory, there are 40 official minutes of play.
Even though each basketball game is 40 minutes long, this time can increase due to the interruptions that happen during a game.
This can happen in stoppages or possible extra time in the event of a draw. Time-outs can happen in the event of infringements by players.
So if you’re planning to watch an NBB basketball match, you can prepare to spend around two hours on the court.
NBB rules: scoring
Scoring in an NBB match takes place by counting three-point baskets, free throws and other forms of scoring.
A player can score two points, for example, when he throws the ball inside the three-point line. If it’s outside the three-point line, your team scores three points if the ball goes into the basket.
You can also score from free throws, which happen when a player is fouled. Your team then has the chance to shoot a free throw to try and put the ball in the basket. For every free throw hit, the team scores a point
According to the Rules of the NBB, then, the total score of a match is made up of the sum of the points won in these three ways.
NBB rules: fouls
The NBB also has established rules for fouls committed during a match. The rules vary in relation to personal, technical, unsportsmanlike and team fouls. Check them out!
Personal absences
It is considered a personal foul in an NBB match when a player makes illegal physical contact with another player from the opposing team. Each player can make a maximum of five fouls before being sent off.
Lack of staff
Team fouls occur when a team accumulates a certain number of penalties in a period of the game. Each of these team fouls results in free throws for the opposing team, and the number of fouls to be taken into account will depend on each competition rule.
Lack of technique
A technical foul occurs when a player commits an infraction that does not involve direct physical contact with someone on the opposing team. These penalties, then, can occur after unsportsmanlike conduct and other excesses.
Unsportsmanlike foul
An unsportsmanlike foul, then, is one that is considered aggressive and harmful to players on the opposing team. In addition to resulting in free throws for the other team, a player who commits this type of foul can be disqualified from the match or championship.
NBB rules: ball possession
The NBB also has its own rules regarding ball possession. Here’s what they are
Initial ball possession
At the start of the game, the referee throws the ball up and one player from each team has to jump to catch it. Initial possession then belongs to the team whose player managed to catch the ball first.
After a basket
For every point scored, i.e. when a basket is made, the team is entitled to a rebound. This is done at the back of the court and takes place with the opposing team’s player.
After a foul
When a foul occurs in an NBB basketball match, a new possession begins. The team that was penalized then has possession of the ball from the spot where the incident occurred.
After a shift
There is a new possession every time a team makes a steal, a turnover or when the ball goes out of bounds after a shot at the basket that is not scored. When this happens, possession goes to the opposing team.
NBB rules: throws
The NBB also has rules regarding throwing the ball into the basket. The first rule is that players can throw the ball from anywhere on the court, as long as it is within the limits determined by the three-point line.
As we mentioned above, shots can be taken inside the three-point line, which is worth two points, or outside the three-point line, which is worth three points.
Free throws can also be made, which take place at a set distance from the basket. The rules have no restrictions on shooting, you just have to make sure you don’t break any other rules of the game.
NBB rules: substitutions
An NBB basketball match also has rules for substitutions, making the match more organized and fair for both teams on the court.
When to make a replacement?
Substitutions can take place at different points in the match, such as breaks between periods, or even at half-time, which happens between the second and third periods.
The team’s coach can also make a substitution if a player gets injured during the game, and this can happen immediately. The substitution can also take place during a time out, which consists of a pause in the match at the request of one of the teams.
How to replace it?
When making a substitution request, the coach talks to the player to be replaced and asks him to leave the court. He then indicates which player will take his place.
It is important that the coach informs the referee of the substitution before it takes place, preferably during one of the breaks in play. The player being substituted must leave the court on the side closest to the bench, and this must happen before the substitute enters the court
How many substitutions can be made?
There is no limit to the number of substitutions that can be made in an NBB basketball match, and everything will depend on the strategies established by each team.
UBB rules: attack time
The NBB also has rules regarding attack time, which is limited to 24 seconds from a team’s possession. In other words, each team has 24 seconds to throw the ball into the opposing team’s basket.
As soon as a player from one team gains possession of the ball, the clock starts counting down the seconds. If he fails to throw the ball into the basket before time runs out, the referee considers it an attack time violation and possession is passed to the other team.
