What is windsurfing?

Windsurfing is a water sport that combines sailing and surfboarding. There is a special board equipped with an adjustable sail attached to a mast. The aim is to control the sail to take advantage of the wind and sail over the water, performing maneuvers.

These characteristics mean that windsurfing is also called sailboarding.

Is windsurfing an Olympic discipline?

Yes, World Sailing recognizes 14 windsurfing classes, including the IQFOiL, which will become an Olympic class in Paris 2024. However, other disciplines have been part of the Olympic framework for many years, since 1984, when the sport inaugurated its place in the tournament.

In practice, the following disciplines have been part of the tournament since it made its Olympic debut:

  • Widnglider;
  • Lechner Division II;
  • Lechner A-390;
  • Mistral One Design;
  • RS:X.

In 2021 in Japan, 10 windsurfing-related events will take place at the Tokyo Games, including Nacra 17 mixed, 49ers and 470.

Already in 2024, two new events will be on the list of Olympic sports for the first time: iQFoil (replacing RS:X in windsurfing) and Formula Kite.

With that in mind, there’s nothing like using images to really understand all about windsurfing, is there? After all, pictures speak more than 1000 words. Learn more about iQFoil in the video below.

It may seem a little confusing, because these names are not part of most people’s daily lives.

However, just imagine that the same sports category has different types of disciplines, with certain particularities, their own athletes and equipment.

You could compare it to athletics. Within this category we find different sports such as barrier running, the marathon, the 100-meter dash and many others. However, all of these sports are part of athletics.

In sailing, the category in which windsurfing falls, this separation is very similar. They are different types of sports under the same umbrella.

Official Windsurfing Competition Rules

In Olympic competitions, the rules of the International Sailing Federation, World Sailing, apply and the competitions consist of boat races, in which all competitors start from the same point and do the course together.

Some of the main rules of official windsurfing competitions include:

  • Demarcated Course: competitions usually take place on a course demarcated by buoys, with competitors sailing around the buoys in a certain order.
  • Scoring: competitors are judged on specific criteria, such as speed, technique, style and maneuver execution. Points are awarded according to each athlete’s performance.
  • Safety: Competitors must wear appropriate safety equipment, such as life jackets and helmets, and follow all instructions from the competition organizers to ensure the safety of all participants.

What’s the difference between surfing and windsurfing?

Surfing and windsurfing are both water sports, but they are very different, starting with the fact that in surfing the board doesn’t have a sail attached. In addition, the surfboard is smaller and lighter and the surfer needs to propel himself towards the waves to catch them.

The windsurfing board is larger and heavier and the sail is used to propel the board through the wind.

Other differences include the fact that the surfer paddles out to catch the wave and then stands on the board, gliding over it.

The windsurfer uses the sail to catch the wind and propel the board, gliding over it.

In summary, surfing and windsurfing are two water sports that have some differences:

  • Equipment: Surfing uses a smaller, lighter board, while windsurfing uses a larger, heavier board with a sail.
  • Movement: The surfer paddles to catch the wave, while the windsurfer uses the sail to catch the wind.
  • Maneuvers: Surfing maneuvers are more acrobatic and radical, while windsurfing maneuvers are more technical and precise.
  • Weather conditions: Surfing is more common in bigger waves, while windsurfing is more common in smaller waves.
  • Difficulty: Surfing and windsurfing are both relatively difficult to learn, but windsurfing can be easier for beginners.

It’s worth saying that since 2021, surfing has also been one of the Olympic sports. And it was a Brazilian, Ítalo Ferreira, who was the men’s champion, adding to the country’s list of Olympic medalists.

What are the main windsurfing tricks?

The list of main windsurfing maneuvers includes:

  • Hit: the athlete throws himself from the top of the wave to its base.
  • Beat 360: the board loses contact with the wave to perform a 360º turn in the air and continue the movement.
  • Jibe (Transition): the athlete changes direction while keeping the sail filled with wind. During the jibe, the windsurfer turns the board around the sail to change direction while maintaining speed and control.
  • Tack: the windsurfer turns the board so that the sail passes through the wind, allowing them to change direction and sail at an angle against the wind.
  • Looping: the athlete jumps and spins the board and sail in a complete circular motion in the air.
  • Backloop: backwards rotation during the jump, rotating the board and sail.
  • Forward Loop: the windsurfer rotates forward during the jump.
  • Freestyle Tricks: this is not an aerial maneuver, but a stunt on the water.

These are just some of the main maneuvers in windsurfing, and there are many others that can be performed as you advance in your skill level.

What do I need to windsurf?

To windsurf, you will need a few basic items such as:

  • Board (there are some more suitable for beginners)
  • Sail: the size and type of sail will also vary depending on your level of experience and the wind conditions.
